Lisbon guide for newcomers

🧭 First steps in Lisbon

Most things in Portugal (a job contract, renting a room, a bank account, a phone contract) ask for the same few documents. Getting them early makes everything else easier.

The usual order: 1) a tax number (NIF), 2) a Social Security number (NISS), 3) registration with a health centre (número de utente), 4) a Portuguese bank account and phone number, 5) the right residence document for your situation.

There are free, in-person help centres for migrants (CLAIM / CNAIM). They can explain your situation in several languages. Ask for the nearest one at your Junta de Freguesia or on the AIMA website.
